#ICA21: I'm Excited For....

1. THIS YEAR'S THEME

"Engaging the Essential Work of Care: Communication, Connectedness, and Social Justice" -- When the ICA 2021 organizing committee (Mary Beth Oliver, Mohan Dutta, Meghan Sanders, Walid Afifi, Chenjerai Kumanyika, and myself) discussed and debated the theme for this year, we had no idea how it would be received. But it not just resonated with everyone but continues to be relevant in this world of continued COVID-19 (and other) inequalities.

2. OUR NEW ICA PRESIDENT!

All I can say is that we are incredibly lucky at ICA to have Dr. Mary Beth Oliver planning this conference. She embodies the ICA conference theme in every aspect of care, connectedness, and social justice. Thank you for your leadership and service!

3. OUR COOL WELCOME VIDEO

I am super excited for our multi-lingual conference welcome video featuring this year's stellar organizing committee members: We had so much fun working together with this dream team!

4. PRINT PROGRAM'S GENERAL INFO PAGE

It's really hilarious. Don't miss it!

Link to the full program (use Ctrl or Command F to search within the program): https://cdn.ymaws.com/www.icahdq.org/resource/resmgr/conference/2021/2021-printprogram.pdf

5. THE OPENING PLENARY

Absolutely inspiring opening plenary "Speaking Truth to Power: Reporting on Politics, Identity, and Social Justice." A Conversation with Yamiche Alcindor, former US White House Correspondent & host of Washington Week. Co-hosted by Mary Beth Oliver, Meghan Sanders, and Laura Sawyer. All women's opening plenary, y'all! Is that some kind of record for ICA? Yaminche talks about the courage and commitment it takes to be an exemplar journalist.

6. OUR BOOK LAUNCH EVENT!! -- Friday at 11 CT/12 ET

Erica Scharrer and I invite you to our book launch event. To learn more about our book and what to expect at the launch event, please read this preview blog post here.

Here are three ways to join the party:

7. ANY-TIME, ANY-WHERE ACCESS TO TALKS

It's so cool that the virtual conference platform offers the opportunity to access the talks for a longer period of time.

8. MY ICA ONLINE COMMUNITY

I search for #ICA21 to see what topics are trending and also check in @icahdq for some pro-tips. Look what I just found - a list of all the handles of all the divisions!

No worries if you are not on Twitter. We also have many divisions on Facebook, including my favorite ones: ICA Activism, Communication & Social Justice Division, and The Children, Adolescents & Media (ICA-CAM)

9. NEW REGIONAL HUBS

Did you know that there are twelve new regional hubs hosting ICA conferences in a hybrid format around the world. I've greatly enjoyed watching the pre-conference on Centering Care: Methodologies of the Global South hosted by the New Zealand regional hub.

10. SOCIAL EVENTS - OOH, SO FUN!

Bored? Do check out the social page. Activity book with fun coloring and crossword puzzles. I love the bingo and match-the-pet game. There's trivia, a Denver zoo virtual safari and a panda camera (yes, seriously!) .

WHAT ARE YOUR FAVORITE ICA 2021 ACTIVITIES? DID I MISS ANY OBVIOUS ONES??
